Leadbeater's Possum Detection Report – 312-510-0011 'Pumba'
This report details the methodology, results and discussion/conclusion of the detection of a critically endangered Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) (LbP) recorded directly adjacent VicForests scheduled logging coupe 312-510-0011 along Messmate Ridge Road, within the Big River State Forest east of Marysville.
The methodology used to detect this Leadbeater's Possum individual involved the use of a remote motion-sensing camera trap (RMSCT) directed towards a bait station. This is now the second recording of a Leadbeater’s Possum off Messmate Ridge Road. We conclude that logging coupes of the Messmate Ridge area and adjacent eastern escarpment of Lake Mountain consists of high- quality Leadbeater’s Possum habitat and therefore should be protected, and all logging coupes be removed from the current Timber Release Plan (TRP).
